An immersive journey of taste at The Blue Bar at The Berkeley

I’m at The Blue Bar at The Berkeley today to try out their new Out Of The Blue experience. Described as a fully immersive journey of taste,  sounds and smells, I can’t wait to see more.

The Out Of The Blue experience is tailored for up to four guests to experience a multi-sensory journey at The Blue Bar at The Berkeley.

We soon find out that the experience combines a bunch of digital tech from projection experts Igloo and sensory specialists Sensiks. Together, they’ve created  film and molecular scents to pair alongside bespoke drinks from The Blue Bar at The Berkeley. Very exciting!

Once we all arrive, we’re taken to a secret room deep in the hotel, where the evening begins.

The Out of the Blue experience

The sealed-off 360-degree projection room is just big enough for four people to sit. We bundle in and arrange ourselves on the fluffy chairs, and wait for the experience begins.

In front of us are four vessels, each filled with a unique drink inspired from the Blue Bar’s True Colours menu. We work our way through the set, and each drink is accompanied by its own multi-sensory journey. They very kindly make up some mocktails for us to try.

Alongside this are the sights and sounds. The projections flash on and abstract imagery appears. At intervals, scents and fragrances fill the air. There’s the obvious smells like pineapple and toffee, and other, less identifiable ones.

These include – weirdly- water. You know – the smell of water on stone. Like the minerality of cold, shallow streams gushing across rock.

Each scent is accompanied by the graphics that surround us, crystal clear acoustics and sips of those mysterious drinks.

A journey through taste, sight, sound & smell

Throughout the experience we are invited to discuss what we think might be inside the vessels that we sip from – the clues are in smells and sights around us. After each vessel is finished the contents of the drinks are revealed, and we marvel at how much more we enjoyed them with the sounds and smells.

Half an hour later and the experience draws to a close, and it’s been a unique one. By stripping away traditional cues, the Out of the Blue experience is actually quite soulful. I feel like I come away with a sense of calm, and of taking the time to actually be in the here and now.

All in all, the Out Of The Blue experience at The Blue Bar at The Berkeley has been beautiful.
