Famed for its deep flavour and tender texture, the Hanger steak has found a new home in Fulham.

A relatively overlooked cut of beef, the Hanger steak is also traditionally known as the ‘butcher’s steak’ owing to the fact that butchers like it so much that they often keep it for themselves. Lucky for us, the guys at Hanger SW6 have taken this beaut of a cut and put it front and centre.

The restaurateur behind Fulham’s newest steak venture is a man called Patrick Falla, who has worked with at the D&D group of restaurants and JW Marriott amongst several other big industry names, and in the kitchen we have the talented James Burton whose training at L’Enclume and Searcy’s at The Gherkin will make for an exciting addition to the area.

Hanger SW6 is spread across two floors with the recently launched bar, Below The Cut, on the lower floor, and a Scandi-cool design aesthetic throughout the ground floor space with a semi-open kitchen at the back.

Supplied fresh daily by Tom Hixson of Smithfiled and butchered on-site, Hanger SW6 use charcoal grills to get the best out their steaks, which are then served very simply with watercress and a choice of sauce. Ours comes with a deliciously tart bearnaise and a side of mac ‘n’ cheese that you just want to bury yourself in, beef dripping chunky chips and crisped courgette fries.

The meat itself has a fairly browned outer char and a happily pink core, and quite lot more texture compared to other steaks. A smaller portion is available for £11 and larger one for £20 (pictured).

We also try a tuna steak, handled sensitively and so that when it reaches us it’s still tender and flakes with ease…

Small plates include the lip tingling salt & vinegar squid which features a very delicate outer crunch, and gloriously meaty salt beef croquettes, studded through with wholegrain mustard and served with a fire-pot portion of Dijon mustard and pickles.

For dessert we revel in a pecan tart that has that very specific crunch that only thickened caramel can accomplish. We love its burnished hue, but would find it better with a touch more ice cream.

We love Hanger SW6 for its simple, seasonal and locally sourced ingredients, and for putting the unsung hero of the meat pack front and centre. Cheers to hanger steak!
