London’s best beef wellington

There’s something so epic about a beef wellington – that simple but perfect combination of buttery pastry, rich duxelle and succulent beef. Yum. And now that I’ve finally found the best beef wellington in London, at Plum & Spilt Milk, I feel an incredible sense of well being.

I’ve been around the block a fair few times when it comes to beef wellingtons. Without naming any names, there have been a couple of stinkers over the last few years.

But now, having found the absolute best beef wellington in London, a king among kings, I can die happy. Probably it’ll be the cholesterol that kills me after I eat this beef wellington over and over again for the rest of my shortened, buttery, incredibly satisfied life. No regrets ;)

So where does the best beef wellington in London come from?

It comes from Plum & Spilt Milk, that’s where.

Plum & Spilt Milk is the darling restaurant at the Great Northern Hotel, that I’ve gushed about before in another blog post.

Named after the dining carriages on the Flying Scotsman, the restaurant is a shining beacon that is the gateway of Kings Cross station.

I only wish I travelled by Eurostar more often, because this is where I would have my pre and post journey meals.

Imagine it; a trip to the heart of Europe that starts off with something as pure and wholesome and delicious as a beef wellington.

Not just any beef wellington though; this is the best beef wellington in London.

And what makes it the best beef wellington in London?

The size, firstly, is perfect for two to share. And I think its these proportions that help to somehow bring a sort of magic to the wellington.

It arrives whole, golden and glistening, before being whisked away to be sliced. Minutes turn to what seem like lifetimes, before we see our beef wellington again.

This time its the intensity of the colour of the beef that is more striking. It’s a plumy, ruby, hot red – the sort of colour on a piece of meat that you dream of and only get occasionally. How did they know so precisely when to take it out of the over?

Between the melting, buttery pastry and the robust, flavourful mushrooms, and the grass-fed, 28-day aged beef, there’s a sort of magic. And then the gravy is poured. Mmm.

With these are some simple, well executed sides of sautéed new potatoes with parsley butter and seasonal vegetables.

As well as praising the beef wellington, there are a fair few other things that we tried at Plum & Spilt Milk that are glorious.

Most of all, I love the Langridge Farm organic asparagus with a single, perfect poached egg and hollandaise sauce.

Save some room for dessert

I doubt that anyone has any room left after demolishing an epic beef wellington. For the purposes of showing you what Plum & Spilt Milk are like however, we took one for the team.

Like it was hard ;)

My personal favourite dessert at Plum & Spilt Milk is their eponymous dessert – a cake doused in zingy plum sauce and sweet poached plums, served with milk gelato. We also love the steamed orange pudding.

All in all, Plum & Spilt Milk remains one of my favourite restaurants. Major bonus points for also serving the best beef wellington in London!
