Hunting down the best pizza in London, one slice at a time

There’s something wonderfully opinionated about asking a Londoner where to find the best pizza in London.

Everyone has a favourite. Usually, they’ll insist it’s life-changing. Often, they’ll tell you everywhere else is overrated.

So I decided to find out for myself.

Over the past few months, I’ve been eating my way across London’s pizza scene, from award-winning Neapolitan pies and gloriously cheesy Detroit squares to New York slices, New Haven-style pizzas and viral TikTok spots. Some have absolutely lived up to the hype. Others… not quite.

Because great pizza isn’t just about beautifully blistered crusts or imported tomatoes. It’s about balance – and whether you’re still thinking about that slice the next morning.

So if you’re wondering where to find the best pizza in London, here’s everywhere I’ve tried so far: ranked, rated and judged with entirely unreasonable enthusiasm.

Right then.

Pass the chilli oil.

Napoli On The Road, Richmond

Napoli On The Road Richmond pizza review margherita

For the best Neapolitan pizza in London

Rating – 5/5

Napoli On The Road is my benchmark restaurant when it comes to the best Neapolitan pizza in London.

The dough is everything you hope it will be: soft, chewy and beautifully blistered around the edges, with just enough char to keep every bite interesting. It folds exactly as a Neapolitan pizza should, without ever feeling soggy.

While the Margherita is excellent, it’s the award-winning Ricordi d’Infanzia that steals the show. Slow-cooked beef ragu and silky parmigiano fondue melt together into something deeply comforting, complimented by the lightness of the dough.

If you’re searching for the best Neapolitan pizza in London, Napoli On The Road is the first place I’d send you.

Detroit Pizza London, Spitalfields

Detroit pizza london spitalfields restaurant review

For the best Detroit-style pizza in London

Rating – 5/5

Detroit Pizza London proves that thick pizza doesn’t have to be heavy.

Every square slice is built around an incredibly airy, focaccia-like base, while the cheese deliberately spills over the sides of the pan before caramelising into gloriously crisp edges. Those corners, incidentally, are worth fighting over.

Both the Margherita and the Tuscan pizza are superb, layering bright toppings over a dough that stays light despite its height. Even better, you can order by the slice, making it easy to try a bunch of flavours.

If you’ve never tried Detroit-style pizza in London before, this is exactly where to start.

Crisp Pizza, Mayfair

Crisp pizza mayfair w1 restaurant review london halal beef pepperoni

For the best halal pepperoni pizza in London

Rating – 5/5

Crisp has become one of London’s hottest pizza restaurants, and after one bite of the Vecna, it’s easy to understand why.

The New Haven-inspired base arrives thin, blistered and charred, with enough crunch to support its toppings. But the real joy is the halal beef pepperoni. As someone who doesn’t eat pork, finally getting to enjoy a proper pepperoni pizza feels like a revelation.

The pepperoni crisps beautifully around the edges, while hot honey adds sweetness that keeps every bite balanced.

If you’re after bold flavours and the best pizza in London, Crisp absolutely deserves the hype.

Lauretta’s Pizzeria, Hackney

laurettas pizzeria restaurant review hackney london pizza

For the best New York-style pizza in London

Rating – 4.5/5

Lauretta’s serves one of the most satisfying New York-style pizzas in London.

Its base is wonderfully thin, crisp underneath and still pleasantly chewy through the middle, striking that difficult balance where every slice folds neatly without collapsing. It feels nicely built.

The Amalfi special is the pizza to order, layering salty anchovies, bright lemon zest, crunchy garlic breadcrumbs and a chilli heat that steadily builds with every slice. There’s plenty going on.

A touch too much char stops it being absolutely perfect, but not by much.

If your ideal slice is thin, crisp and loaded with personality, the Lauretta’s is one of the best places to eat pizza in London.

Breadstall, Soho

Breadstall Pizza Soho London restaurant review ragu

For the best pizza by the slice in London

Rating – 4.5/5

Breadstall has solved one of London’s great pizza dilemmas: how do you try several pizzas without committing to an entire pie?

Its quarter-pizza format is solves that problem, letting you mix and match flavours while still ending up with a proper meal.

The beef ragu and mushroom slice is the standout, pairing rich, slow-cooked meat with an airy sourdough crust that is both crisp and chewy.

If you’re looking for the best pizza in central London, Breadstall will do you.

Slayer, Notting Hill

For the viral pizza that’s good enough

Rating – 3.5/5

Slayer has become something of a TikTok sensation, so naturally I wanted to see what all the fuss was about.

The Margherita slice is undeniably well executed. The base is crisp on the outside, chewy through the middle, and sturdy enough to eat while wandering around Notting Hill.

What it lacks, though, is that one unforgettable moment. It’s enjoyable while you’re eating it, but by the next day I’m simply not craving another slice.

If you’re already nearby, Slayer is a very good lunch. I just wouldn’t cross London to eat there.

So what’s actually the best pizza in London?

After eating my way through some of London’s most talked-about pizzerias, one thing has become obvious.

A lot of places serve, what could be considered, the best pizza in London.

Whether you want pillowy Neapolitan dough, crisp New York slices, towering Detroit squares or beautifully charred New Haven-style pies, there’s an excellent version waiting somewhere in the city.

But just like burgers, the best pizza isn’t always the one with the longest queue or the loudest TikTok following. It’s the one you can’t stop thinking about afterwards. The one you catch yourself recommending to friends before they’ve even asked where to eat.

For me, that crown currently belongs to Napoli On The Road. It’s the pizza I measure everything else against, balancing beautiful dough, exceptional toppings and effortless consistency.

That said, the best pizza in London depends on what you’re craving.

  • Want award-winning Neapolitan pizza? Napoli On The Road.
  • Want gloriously cheesy Detroit slices? Detroit Pizza London.
  • Want New York-style pizza? Lauretta’s Pizzeria.
  • Want brilliant pizza by the slice? Breadstall.
  • Want halal pepperoni done properly? Crisp Pizza.
  • Want a dependable slice while you’re exploring Notting Hill? Slayer.

The good news is that London’s pizza scene keeps getting better.

Which, admittedly, is terrible news for my waistline. But excellent news for everyone else.
