Introducing Diptyque Oud Palao

Diptyque Oud Palao perfume review

You’re probably sick of hearing it by now, but I’m crazy about Oud. My current obsession in this perfume genre is the Diptyque Oud Palao.

It’s taken me years and I know I’ve joined the party late, but I just can’t seem to get enough of it. I like it so much so in fact, that my last few perfumes have all been based on Arabian Oud. There’s been Fumee Arabie by Miller Harris; Alien Oud Majestueux by Thierry Mugler; and Byredo’s Oud Immortel.

In the same fashion, my latest exploration into the world of Oud is with Diptyque Oud Palao, a perfume that I’ve come to very much appreciate. Ok, ok; I love it.

A rosy, hug-in-a-bottle…

It’s hard to explain how, but Diptyque Oud Palao somehow manages to marry the rich complexities of Oud, with the feeling of also being fresh. There’s a delicate balance in it somehow. Magic.

Diptyque Oud Palao perfume for her

Notes:

Bulgarian rose, Laotian Oud, vanilla, cypriol, sandalwood, olibanum, Spanish cistus and patchouli.

The first spritz of Diptyque Oud Palao reveals a billowing Bulgarian rose that blooms on your skin. It’s a big, juicy flower, that shines for a second before being enveloped in Laotian Oud.

Sandalwood comes in next, softened with creamy vanilla. Beyond this are those gorgeous spices; a pepperiness that gives the fragrance an edgy dimension. Some people smell cinnamon, but I can’t personally detect it.

Alongside this is a good hit of incense too that conjures images of the Middle East. This smokiness soon settles down and lends a powdery note to the perfume. It’s lovely.

In actual fact there’s no incense listed in the Diptyque Oud Palao fragrance notes, and on further inspection the incense is listed as an olfactory accident. Whatever the case may be, I like it.

Finally, the dry down of Oud Palao is dominated with tobacco and leather, to create a deep, dark perfume.

11+ hours of solid wear

Another key point to note is that the Diptyque Oud Palao has a really great running time, lasting well into the 11th hour. If you spray it on your clothes, then it wafts around you for even longer.

On balance I’ve really loved Oud Palao by Diptyque. It’s a classic Arabian Oud perfume, that’s easy to buy in London, and transports you to the heart of the East. Hashtag hearts.
