Trying the new gochujang menu at Shake Shack Covent Garden

Shake Shack Covent Garden have gone Korean with a new gochujang menu! In fact, every Shake Shack in London now has the new menu. And there I was thinking you couldn’t improve on the humble burger.

Turns out gochujang makes everything better.

So what’s gochujang?

Gochujang is a red fermented paste used in Korean cooking, made with chili peppers, sticky rice and soybeans. It’s an absolute flavour-bomb, and it lends a crazy amount of umami flavour to anything, from marinades to stews and sauces. And now to Shake Shake’s burgers.

And how is it used in Shake Shack, Covent Garden?

At the Covent Garden outpost, Shake Shack use gochujang as a glaze on their chicken burger. It’s got this addictive quality about it, and the glaze adds texture as well as flavour. Best of all, it gives the burger a real meatiness, and an almost-smoky backnote.

In terms of flavour, its kinda spicy, but kinda sweet too. It packs a flavour punch, that’s for sure.

There are also new gochujang chicken bites, served with a gochujang mayo for dipping. And these are proper bits of chicken too, not your grubby old nuggets. Again, they’re highly addictive morsels.

We also order the gochujang fries, because why the heck not? They’re good – but I prefer the comfort of the classic cheesy fries.

I’m making myself both hungry and at the same time full remembering all the food. Somehow, we also ordered the matcha cookies and cream milkshake. Which is a pure delight – but it’s also like a massive dessert in a cup.

I reckon two people could get away with a burger each, and one fries and shake to share. It’s rich stuff.

Overall thoughts on the gochujang menu at Shake Shack

All in all, I’ve really enjoyed the new gochujang offerings at Shake Shack. The burger is the standout winner, and one I’ll be ordering more of. Much more. Om nom.
