A Romantic Stay at Hotel Kungstradgarden, Stockholm

Hotel Kungsträdgården, Stockholm

Nestled away on a cobbled street in Stockholm is the boutique Hotel Kungstradgarden, where we have the pleasure of spending a few gorgeous days. The reason for our visit to Stockholm (as if anyone needs one) is to celebrate our marriage with a little European minimoon. Yay!

In fact, we’ve decided to celebrate with a series of little trips – following Stockholm will be Amsterdam and then Marrakech. If all goes according to plan then our series of minimoons with culminate with a longer trip to California next year. Whoop whoop!

Anyway, back to Stockholm, and the beautiful Hotel Kungstradgarden!

A weekend in Stockholm at Hotel Kungstradgarden

Located on a street close to the Kungstradgarden park, our hotel takes its name and its nature from its leafy neighbour. Just like the park with its tree-lined boulevard, the hotel is petite in size and Parisian in character.

In particular, the hotel’s gorgeous glass-roofed atrium provides the perfect foil to the busyness of the city. We especially love sitting here for breakfast, or during the day with coffees and cake.

Furthermore, in a stroke of pure luxury the whole hotel is also furnished with some of the prettiest chandeliers. There are over 120 in total in fact, including inside the rooms too.

Our room at Hotel Kungstradgarden

But enough about the meta, lets take a closer look at our room ;)

Laid out across an elegantly restored 18th century residence, Hotel Kungstradgarden has just 98 rooms, which include 5 suites. It’s a very pretty place to call home for a few days.

Our room is on the fifth floor of the hotel, located in a little space just under the sloped roof. Although it’s on the small side, the romantic character more than makes up for it.

We have our own little picture window, carved into the sloping roof and looking out onto a little square just outside.

As always, my favourite part of the room is the deliciously springy bed, complimented with fresh linens and curvy, French furniture. In addition, the bathroom has a high-pressure rain shower (yay) and some lovely, fluffy robes.

Whilst our room is on the small side, it still has its own built in wardrobe with space to hang and fold clothes, a minibar, safe, iron and ironing stand.

Breakfast at Hotel Kungsträdgården

Sometimes, my favourite part of visiting a hotel is a trip to the breakfast bar in the morning, and Hotel Kungsträdgården doesn’t disappoint.

In fact, this might be one of my favourite breakfast bars so far in Europe, and what makes it so nice is the quality of its food.

To elaborate, it’s the fact that the simple things are done beautifully here: the salmon gravadlax uses fresh fish and allows us to taste Stockholm from the get go; for the experienced there is herring, served four ways; the waffles are always less than 5 minutes fresh, and they taste it; the scrambled eggs are supple and fluid; the cheese board is always full and the breads are divine.

Just thinking about it is making me hungry….

There are also a number of different dairy and non-dairy milks on offer, as well as smoothies and fresh squeezed orange, peach and mango juice. Delicious.

And, when you’re ready to leave, you can nab a little pastry or piece of fruit from the entrance as a snack to go. It’s a very thoughtful touch.

Breakfast is served in Brasserie Makalos, the hotels quintessentially French restaurant. As we come and go from the hotel on trips around the city, we smell some of the best aromas at the lunch and dinner service. This time round we don’t get a chance to try out a lunch or dinner here – so will have to come back soon ;)

Things to do at Hotel Kungstradgarden

In terms of facilities, Hotel Kungstradgarden has a gym and sauna area, both of which deserve a visit if you have time… who am I kidding, there’s no way I’m spending time in a gym on holiday, and on minimoon no less ;)

In addition to its on-site facilities (and rather excellent restaurant and bar), Hotel Kungstradgarden is also blessed with a great, central location.

For example, Gamla Stan (the old town) is a 5 minute stroll away to the south, and the beautiful areas of Ostermalm can also be reached on foot to the east. The underground (Tunnelbana) system will take you further afield, or pop into an Uber (which operates very smoothly in Stockholm).

All in all its been a gorgeous trip to Stockholm, and the Hotel Kungstradgarden has provided the perfect base from which to have a luxurious stay and explore the city!
