Amalfi as a base

Amalfi makes an excellent base for the coast. It’s a compact town with good shops and restaurants, beautiful buildings, wide views, and lighter crowds than Positano.

First impressions of Anantara Convento di Amalfi hotel

The hotel occupies a very old building and much of the appeal comes from its historical spaces, thick walls, and a sense of place. Some of that character also reads as rustic, and not every quirk feels intentional.

Check in at Anantara Convento di Amalfi

Official check-in is 3pm. We arrived around 1pm and there was no flexibility to accommodate an earlier check-in. At this price point, a little more effort to be hospitable would have set a better tone.

Our junior suite with terrace and hot tub

We booked a junior suite with a private terrace and hot tub (around £2000 per night on our dates). The room itself was small for the category, with just enough space around the superking bed for bedside tables, and not much more.

Weirdly, the bathroom was split with the toilet and bidet in one room, and the shower and basin in another. It meant you couldn’t wash your hands immediately after using the toilet. This felt like a design compromise rather than a considered choice. For the rate, it underwhelmed.

The private terrace was a highlight, featuring two deck chairs, a small table and two dining chairs, and a panoramic view over Amalfi that we enjoyed throughout the stay.

The hot tub was less successful though, being very compact and really only comfortable for one person. It also collected flies quickly, and we largely stopped using it after day one.

Based on this Anantara Convento di Amalfi hotel review, I would not recommend paying extra for a hot tub room.

In-room amenities

The bed was very comfortable and there was a large TV with easy Chromecast connectivity. A coffee machine and complimentary touches (lemon juice, candied lemon peel, traditional biscuits, and water) were appreciated. The minibar is chargeable. Toiletries were by Acqua di Parma and were excellent in both fragrance and quality.

Getting to town: shuttle service

The shuttle runs every 30 minutes between the hotel and Amalfi town. It is genuinely useful, but at busy times we were shoulder to shoulder with other guests and the air conditioning felt weak. More frequent runs or a higher-spec vehicle would better match the hotel’s positioning.

Where it fell short

During a sudden hailstorm in nearby Atrani (about a 12 minute walk), we were soaked and unable to secure a taxi or bus. We called the hotel to arrange a taxi pickup – instead we were advised to walk back through the automobile tunnel, which felt unsafe in the rain on slippery roads. When we asked again for a taxi, the request was refused. We eventually navigated unfamiliar stairs in poor weather back to Amalfi and waited for the shuttle. For a hotel at this level, the response was disappointing and left a lasting negative impression.

Dining at Anantara Convento di Amalfi hotel

Room service at lunch (seafood linguine and a club sandwich) was well cooked, though the pasta portion was on the small side and the seafood leaned mostly clams with a couple of prawns.

At Dei Cappuccini, the hotel’s upmarket restaurant, the three course tasting menu had mixed results. The bread course was interesting but not memorable.

Two dishes stood out – a prawn risotto with clear, focused flavour, and a beef paccheri pasta that was deeply savoury and satisfying. The tiramisu rum baba dessert was a little waterlogged, and the petits fours were forgettable. Overall, it was thoughtful cooking, but not strong enough to draw you away from the good, more relaxed meals available in Amalfi itself.

Pool and breakfast at Anantara Convento di Amalfi

The infinity pool is excellent – although unheated, the summer weather means it’s still pleasantly swimmable at 9am, uncrowded during our visits, and set against wide sea views.

Breakfast is a clear strength. There is a generous buffet of breads, cheeses, pickled items, traditional sweets, cereals and juices, plus a thoughtful kids cart.

An a la carte menu, with eggs in several styles with sausages, waffles, French toast, and some international options like samosas and gyozas, is included and unlimited. Coffee was consistently very good.

The verdict

Come for the location above lovely Amalfi, the views from the terraces, the quality breakfast, and the calm of the pool. Be aware that rooms (even junior suites) can feel small, layouts can be awkward, the hot tub upgrade is not worthwhile, shuttle comfort varies, and service can falter, both at check-in and, in our case, when it mattered most during bad weather. At this price, the gaps are hard to overlook, and they affect whether we would recommend the hotel overall.
