Beam is an all-day breakfast spot in Notting Hill, with a Middle Eastern twist.

The Beam Benedict is described as the signature dish in Notting Hill. So of course, we have to order it for breakfast.

It starts with a sturdy breakfast muffin, topped with pickled red cabbage and shawarma-spiced lamb patties. On top of this are ‘crispy’ fried poached eggs, and a glossy harissa hollandaise that smells rich and faintly smoky.

This is not a shy breakfast.

I cut into the egg, past the crispy exterior and through to the yolk that spills out perfectly liquid. It’s thick and golden, and clings to the muffin and turns every bite into a sauce-soaked dream.

The lamb patty is the star though, being beautifully spiced and deliciously savoury. It tastes like someone actually understands seasoning, which is more rare at brunch than it should be.

Then the harissa hollandaise comes through, creamy and rich with a gentle heat that keeps the whole dish from tipping into heaviness. The pickled red cabbage lifts everything, giving sharpness and crunch.

It’s balanced, bold, and deeply satisfying.

Also, it’s filling. Next time, I’d be tempted to share it, especially if we’re ordering extra plates.

The Chai Latte

Not enough oomph

I order a hot chai latte because it feels like the obvious pairing with shawarma-spiced lamb and harissa hollandaise. In theory.

In practice, it’s smooth and comforting, but underpowered.

When you’ve just eaten something as assertive as the Beam Benedict, you want your drink to keep up.

I find myself wishing Beam had something with more punch and personality, like a proper karak chai or a Turkish coffee that could match the energy of the food.

The chai latte is pleasant, but I’d love the restaurant to push the drinks harder to match the food.
