5 Reasons Why Photographers Love Ljubljana
Playing with photography in Ljubljana
I recently had the pleasure of being able to work with Canon to launch their newest camera, the EOS 200D. We flew all the way to Ljubljana in Slovenia, and set about exploring the gorgeous city.
If I didn’t know before, I certainly found out just why photographers love to shoot here. It’s stunning.

The city hits the sweet spot when it comes to quirky Eastern European charm, great architecture, and natural wonders.
Without further ado then, here are my pick of the best pictures to take in Ljubljana…
The best food pictures to take in Ljubljana
In the summer months, the Ljubljana Central Market plays host to Odprto Kuhna Open Kitchen, where all the best restaurants in the city serve their signature dishes.
There are dumplings, whole roasted farm animals, curries, burgers, these incredible skewers of meat and more.
It’s an incredible smorgasbord of both food and photo opportunities. Definitely one to add to the list!
The best place to capture a stunning view of Ljubljana
In my opinion, the best view over the city is from the rooftop restaurant at the Neboticnik skyscraper.
It’s not a very tall building in relation to its global counterparts, but it is one of the highest manmade points in the city. And the view is delicious.
We especially love the way the sun sets against the Ljubljana castle.
The best use of a wide angle lens in Ljubljana
To say that Ljublana is picturesque is an understatement – in fact, it’s almost like a small town masquearding as a city.
The Ljubljanica river splits and marries all through the gorgeous old town. Bridges are formed in threes, and they cross and converge every few steps, and along the way are sunny gelaterias and moody coffee shops.
Further in, there are deliciously cobbled alleys, wood shuttered windows and lucky-penny fountains.
All in all, there is loads to get stuck in to with a wide angle lens, and we couldn’t imagine exploring the city without one.
The best urban landscape to take a picture in Ljubljana
Formally an army barracks, Metelkova City is now a sprawl of buildings that offer themselves as venues for alternate nights.
The heavily graffitied make up feels raw and real, as do the people who come here. We loved exploring the squares and urban stretched with a pancake lens.
The best interiors shot in Ljubljana
Now to be honest, we spent most of the time outdoors. But we did come across these great spiral stairs in the Neboticnik tower, and couldn’t help but take a few shots.
There’s something mesmerising about the circular sweep of a multi-level staircase, and I never get tired of taking shots like these.
My favourite place to take a picture…
So this shot is actually from the seaside town of Piran, located just over an hours drive from Ljubljana.
Piran is often quoted as being one of the most beautiful towns in Slovenia, and as we walk around, we can definitely see why.
There’s lots of scope to get some gorgeous blue-on-blue sea and sky shots. There are boats and medieval squares, and the town wraps effortlessly around the Adriatic.
This is our favourite shot from Piran…
Have you been to Ljubljana before? What have been your favourite places to take photographs in? We’d love to know your stories too, so feel free to get in touch here and on Instagram :)
Ljubljana is one of my all time favourites…underrated and postcard picture perfect in every way!
I love the idea of thinking about a city in terms of where/how you can take photographs there. I feel as bloggers we are often even motivated to go to certain places if we know our photos from there will be beautiful!
