Shackfuyu french toast – does it live up to the hype?
Shackfuyu french toast – does it live up to the hype?
Here’s why the kinako French toast at Shackfuyu is my favourite dessert in London
I guess I’ve already answered the question, with a massively resounding yes! The Shackfuyu French toast absolutely lives up to the hype.
It was my favourite dessert in London 5 years ago when I first tried it at Shackfuyu, a lovely pan-asian, east-meets-west restaurant in Soho. And it’s still the best thing I’ve put in my mouth, by a long shot.

So what is the Shackfuyu French toast?
Its full name is kinako French toast with matcha soft serve ice cream, and it’s the only dessert served at the Shackfuyu restaurant in Soho.
And the French toast is so unbeatable because it combines about half a dozen mouth-watering things in one slick package.
There’s the matcha itself, which is a massive trend in desserts because it’s so delicious to eat. Fight me.
In the Shakfuyu French toast, matcha takes the form of soft serve ice cream, which is trend #2. Who doesn’t go weak at the knees for a perfectly twirled mound of soft serve? And talk about nostalgia. There isn’t enough soft serve in the world, amirite?
So we’ve got one half of the dessert – so delicious, so good. The French toast forms the second half.
The French toast at Shackfuyu has the fluffiest insides, soft and gooey and saturated. In what? Who knows… matcha? Crack? Something amazing.
And then there’s this gorgeous caramelized crust. A spoon through it reminds me of the first cracking of a crème brulee. And dusted on top is kinako, a roasted soybean flour, that adds the most gorgeous earthiness. It balances out the sweetness of the matcha ice cream and French toast and lends even more complexity.

Should I eat anything else at Shackfuyu?
Nothing could live up to the deliciousness that is the kinako French toast with matcha soft serve ice cream at Shackfuyu. But if you’re not just a dessert guzzler like, ahem, me, then you might also want to try the small and large savoury plates.
From these, my favourites are the teriyaki salmon bao buns – because I’m low-key addicted to Bao. Also, try the wagyu beef hot pot, which is cooked at the table. It takes just a few minutes to finish cooking, and then you swirl it through an egg yolk. Om nom.
So, if you’re in Soho and hungry, Shackfuyu is the place to go.
Is the food at Shackfuyu Halal?
Shackfuyu serve halal chicken wings. But staff have said that the fried food is all cooked in the same oil as pork. So the choice of whether you eat the fried things is up to you in terms of it being halal. The restaurant also have some delicious non-fried food.
