How to make your rental bedroom feel like home
How to make your rental bedroom feel like home
We used framed prints to make our rental bedroom feel like ours
Hubby and I are saving for a house, and renting til we can buy one. We’ve done a bunch of stuff since we moved in to make our space feel more homey. Here’s how we used art to inject personality and make our rental bedroom feel like home.
What did we have to work with?
When we moved in the room looked like this:
The walls are a yellowy shade (think magnolia) and the floorboards bounce that colour around. But the room has gorgeously high ceilings, and loads of space. So there’s lots to work with.
We can’t repaint or get our own furniture yet, but we can carefully re-arrange, and add injections of personality with framed prints.
Desenio’s Gallery Wall Tool makes choosing prints easy
There’s loads of inspiration online about how to put together a gallery wall, and there are plenty of places to buy posters and frames. There’s so much choice in fact that it can feel overwhelming.
In the end we choose to go with Desenio, a Swedish company that sells some really interesting posters online. You can also buy a range of frames to hang your posters in, which helps to keep the art crisp and clean.
For us, the biggest benefit in using Desenio is with their ‘create a gallery wall’ tool, which lets you drag-and-drop posters onto pre-prepared templates. Like so:
We weren’t actually going to create a gallery wall as such, but we used this tool to experiment with different combinations of prints.
This let us see which pieces would go well together, and gave us a lot more confidence when it came to picking out our prints!
So which prints did we choose for our rental bedroom?
After loads of back and forth, we chose a couple of different prints. We couldn’t wait to see how they’d look in our rental bedroom…
Ta-da! I love how homey the room looks filled with our prints.
We picked a couple of larger prints with lots of white space, to help break up yellow of the walls.
To that end, we also covered up the dark sofas and table with neutral toned blankets and tablecloth. I also put one of my berber-style rugs down which helped to bounce whiter light around, and de-emphasis the yellow.
In terms of putting the prints up, we used the ledges that were already in the room (radiator cover and fireplace) to lean the prints on and against. So no holes in walls :)
My personal favourite is the black and white ‘Vintage Camera’, which makes me think about my own photography.
I also love ‘Parisian Balcony’, which reminds me of that time we spent a day in Paris. It’s so pretty, and I like how the open windows draw you in.
Next, hubby and I both loved the idea of getting some prints related to our California trip.
So we picked ‘California Travel’ and ‘Poolside Palm Reflection‘. These added splashes of blue to an otherwise black and white aesthetic, which I really like.
Keeping with the travel theme, we also picked out ‘Palms on Ipanema’ and ‘Vintage Car in Rome’.
Lastly, we picked ‘Antibes’. There’s something about the clean, minimal lines that go really well in this space.
I also like how this print goes beyond the picture rail, and emphasis how high the ceilings are.
All in all, I love the way the space has come together, and how effective the prints are at making our rental bedroom feel like home!
Do you live in a rental, and how do you make the space feel like your own? Let us know :)
