Lunch at Shikumen, Ealing – restaurant review

How gorgeous is this weather?! All I want to do is head out and be in the sunshine; take my laptop to my local park and work under the sun. Having said that, being in the heat of these incredible last few days is hungry work. Therefore, it’s with a bounce in my step that I’m off to lunch at Shikumen today, one of my favourite Chinese restaurants in Ealing.

A Set ‘Business Lunch’ at Shikumen, Ealing

The Ealing branch of Shikumen have just launched a ‘business lunch’ set menu, giving you the choice of having up to 4 courses. It seems like really great value, so we dive straight in!

The set menu business lunch at Shikumen starts off with a soup course. From two options I choose the enoki mushroom hot and sour soup – a choice that I  immediately regret. The soup is brown, thick, and has a sort of jammy-funkyness to it. Gah.

In hindsight I would skip the first of the four courses, and stick to what follows, as the rest is miles better.

Soup is followed by the second course of a single duck spring roll, that is rather delicious. I love the thin crispness of the roll and the shredded, juicy duck within it.

Closely following the duck roll is the third course from the set ‘business lunch’ menu – the Penang fried Ho Fun with beef.

This is one of my favourite comfort foods, and lunch at Shikumen would be incomplete without trying it. Their version of the Ho Fun is lovely – well balanced, full of beef, and incredibly moreish.

Off menu items – dim sum & sticky rice

A lunch at Shikumen would be incomplete without some dim sum and lotus leaf rice. We order these from the a la carte and marvel at the sticky shine of the fried dumplings, and the parcels of hot, savoury rice.

Finally, our lunch at Shikumen finishes with a very mellow and highly delicious scoop of black sesame ice cream. Noms.

So would I go back for the set business lunch? Hmm. I might order two courses from it (the Ho Fun and ice cream for example), whilst also dipping into the dim sum menu. You just have to :)

Is the food at Shikumen Halal?

Shikumen don’t serve any halal chicken or beef. If you’d still like to visit, they do have halal fish and vegetarian options on the menu.
