Peggy Porschen, the most Instagrammable coffee shop in London?

I don’t know how it’s happened but, sometime in the last few years, Peggy Porschen has risen to extraordinary levels of fame. Insta-fame that is.

To a bystander, it might look odd that a simple coffee shop could attract such large crowds on a daily, continuous basis, but the phenomenon is quickly becoming normalized. It has somehow come to pass that the sheer Instagrammability of a place has become its main mark of success.

And, in turn, although I don’t always like to acknowledge the power of Instagram, I’ve also felt the need to get those elusive Peggy Porschen pictures.

Doing it for the ‘Gram

On one hand, going somewhere just for its Instagram value is a bit sad. But it’s undeniable that there are certain places and images that simply do the best on Instagram in terms of engagement. From a cynical point of view, it makes sense then to post those sorts of images.

On the other hand however, that same mechanism means that I often explore whole swathes of London that up until now I haven’t.

And this means that weekends are now filled with walking tours, stopping off at the most Instagrammable places in London, eating things that are often delicious and seeing the sights.

Instead of just heading to our same old haunts in London, we’re going further afield, and deeper in. It’s quite fun, and it feels like being a tourist again.

On top of that, my photography has also changed. For one thing, it’s become less ad-hoc, more organized and, dare I say it, better? Maybe that’s because I’m spending more time considering angles, perspectives and light. Taking inspo from other pictures on Instagram, I evaluate the best times of the day to get the shot that I want, at its prettiest angle, and its this extra time that leads to a better shot.

Unfortunately, it’s also not the most original photography, and both my Instagram feed and profile are becoming more and more populated with shots of the same place. Sigh.

Does Peggy Porschen live up to the hype?

All things considered I’m, in equal parts, resigned and excited to visit Peggy Porschen for the first time.

I head there to meet my blogging soulmate, Odette, and together our goal is to Instagram the socks off of Peggy Porschen.

We arrive, shocked at the 20-or-so-strong crowd of people outside this pink little coffee shop.

In fact, it quickly becomes apparent that the majority of these people are only here to take a picture outside the famous Peggy Porschen, probably to post on social media.

Once they take their shot in front of the iconic Peggy Porschen doorway, in all of its floral glory, they move on. Because of this hit-and-run style of photography, on the Friday afternoon we visit there are plenty of tables still available to sit at, and no wait time.

Even though the crowds do get a little annoying in their persistence, we quickly remember that we’re here for the same thing too. It’s a thought helps enable us to enjoy our cupcakes and coffee in peace (after taking about a hundred pictures of them first, of course) ;)

And how is the food at Peggy Porschen?

Whilst the coffee we order is good, the cupcakes are a little disappointing on our visit. The cake itself is dry and the icing/buttercream on top, whilst gorgeous to look at and to photograph, isn’t that fabulous to actually eat. Its piled high and not that flavourful… you get the gist.

Oh, and the cost of one of those sweet, little, Valentines Day Limited-Edition cupcakes? Upwards of £6 ;)

But will this stop us from posting on the ‘gram? Of course not.

It’s a dystopian world we live in.

I do want to visit Peggy Porshen just for gram. It is so disappointed when places like this don’t have the same level of produce especially when they have a queue out the door. They definitely have to up their game

Opso, A Brilliant Greek Place in Marylebone

Opso, named after the ancient Greek word for “delicacy”, is a Greek restaurant with a contemporary edge. Try a bowl of barrel aged feta cheese, which is of an entirely new texture to me, being elastic and pull-able rather than crumbly. Spooning this on top of toasty bread, doused in both olive oil and tzatziki, brings a pleasure so disproportionate that my dining companion edges an inch away from me. Sod it, it’s that good.
