Rainbow Dim Sum at Baozi Inn, Soho
Rainbow Dim Sum at Baozi Inn, Soho
Baozi Inn – a good place for dim sum?
Located on Romilly Street, in one of the busiest quarters of Soho, lies the Chinese restaurant Baozi Inn.
I often walk past it, and from its windows I sometimes see the most vibrant baskets of rainbow-coloured dim sum.
It’s safe to say that Baozi Inn has been winking at me to come in for some time now ;)
With images of jewel-toned dim sum in mind, I arrange to take some friends to Baozi Inn to try their (insta-famous) dumplings.
Trying out the rainbow-coloured dim sum
Having now experienced the restaurant for myself, I can see exactly why the dim sum here is so popular. For one thing they’re totally gorgeous, vibrantly coloured and tantalizingly glossy. Most importantly however, they’re incredibly delicious too. Om nom.

Our adventures in rainbow-hued dim sum start with the classic Xiao Long Bao, which arrive in a large bamboo box. The lid of the box is lifted, and a cloud of steam puffs up and dissipates to reveal marbled green and bright yellow dumplings. They’re filled with soup and mince, and quickly turn into a favourite amongst my friends.
Like me, if you don’t eat pork then you won’t be able to try these. They’re glorious to look at though, and I couldn’t resist taking a picture of them.

Alongside these we try the prawn dumplings, delicately folded in beetroot pastry. The ruby-red casings are thin enough to be almost translucent, so that you can just about see the impression of fat little prawns inside.
Next up come the chicken and prawn shui mai, pinched together in golden-toned turmeric pastry. As well as being highly photogenic, they prove to be just as lovely to eat (especially when dipped in the searingly-hot chilli oil).
Another steam-filled basket arrives, revealing more garnet-coloured dim sum. These turn out to be my personal favourites – the cuttlefish shui mai in chilli juice pastry.
Last but not least we also love the prawn and chive dumplings, pleated in emerald green spinach pastry.

We also order a portion of slippery cheung fun, which could be described as rice noodle rolls. They’re ok but, between you and me, I’ve had better, so I wouldn’t necessarily recommend having these here.
Would we go back to Baozi Inn?
Hmmm, so would we go back to Baozi Inn? Haha, as if I needed to hesitate – yes, we would absolutely go again. They do a fabulous dim sum menu, that I can’t wait to explore more of.
The dumplings have all been wonderful; delicate, generously filled and also beautifully vibrant. I reckon we should hereby call them rainbow dim sum!
What’s more, they’re also served during lunchtime. Although this might not be the most traditional approach, it means that they’re available to eat all day long. Winner.
Is the food at Baozi Inn Halal?
