Enjoy stunning London views with a Christmassy afternoon tea at Shangri-La Hotel at The Shard

The Shard is one of my favourite buildings in London. It’s filled with incredible restaurants, and has some of the most beautiful views across the city. This December is a great time to visit and try the new festive afternoon tea at Shangri-La Hotel at The Shard.

Where is it?

Today, we’re enjoying festive afternoon tea at Ting, a restaurant at Shangri-La Hotel, on the 35th floor of The Shard. Luckily, our table is right up against the glass, and the views of London from up here are incredible.

What makes the sky-high festive afternoon tea at Shangri-La Hotel so good?

Although Ting serve afternoon tea all year round, their festive afternoon tea is particularly special.

For one thing, Ting really know how to make the ceremony of afternoon tea feel special. Once we’re seated, we’re given cups of cold honey tea as a palate cleanser. Our wonderful host adds a liquid to the bottom of the tray, and fills the table with thick, milky clouds.

How wonderful. After this pretty display, we then move on to choosing our hot tea accompaniments to the afternoon tea. The tea menu at Ting is reassuringly long, and from it we choose a smoky Pu’erh, to drink with our savouries.

Sandwiches and scones for afternoon tea at Shangri-La Hotel at The Shard

Once we choose our first tea, our host whisks away the palate cleanser, and brings over the afternoon tea stand.

But first, our attention is drawn to cups of delicious Atlantic prawn cocktail, which serve to whet the appetite for our main afternoon tea.

The first plate holds delicate finger sandwiches, filled with salmon and black butter pepper, halal turkey with cranberry, halal roast beef, and classic cucumber. We enjoy them so much that we order seconds. No regrets.

After this, we take another short break, before tucking in to scones. These are cosseted in white linen, and we pry open the fabric to pluck them out. Clotted cream and jam are dutifully spread, and we finish the last of our Pu’erh tea while eating them. Yum.

I think we can all agree that desserts are the best part of any afternoon tea

Our last tea pot spent, we’re guided to pick another tea. This time, we choose the Tie Guan Yin, a premium Oolong tea. Its characteristic milkiness provides the perfect foil for our afternoon tea desserts.

Favourites include the mint chocolate ganache with hibiscus mousse, and the cute little snowmen cake. Remember to save room for the coffee baravois too, with spicy orange jam. We save the best for last though – bright pink passionfruit and cardamom macarons. Om nom.

We also get another cake tier as part of the festive afternoon tea at Shangri-La Hotel. What a treat! This one is filled with slices of traditional fruit cake, and cute little carrot cake muffins. With these, we choose a pot of classic Earl Grey tea, to cut through the richness and balance everything out.

And that concludes our festive afternoon tea at Shangri-La Hotel! It’s been a wonderful experience, and reminds me how much I love both afternoon tea and The Shard. Ting is one of the best restaurants here, and you know that the Shangri-La Hotel will always look after you.
