An Instagrammer’s Guide To Stockholm

Having just spent a weekend in Stockholm, with my new hubby on our minimoon (yay), I Instagrammed quite a bit… so I thought I’d recommend what I consider to be the most Instagrammable places in Stockholm!

7 Instagrammable Places In Stockholm

In fact the urge to Instagram about Stockholm reminded me of an article that was written recently.

It was about the growing importance of the ‘Instagrammability’ of a destination when choosing where to go on holiday. For Millenials, of course ;)

And although the desire to ‘gram is relatively new… I can relate to it. Without further ado then, here’s my brief Instagrammer’s guide to Stockholm…

1 | Prinsesstarta (Princess Cake)

Mmm Prinsesstarta! This has to be one of the best things to eat in Stockholm… and the first place to try it is at Kaffekoppen, a gorgeous Kondotorie located in the Stortoget of Gamla Stan.

Once you’re seated at Kaffekoppen (we recommend a table on their front porch), then set about ordering your first Prinsesstarta.

Prinsesstarta (or Princess Cake) is a Swedish classic, and rightly so. This wonder of a baked good is composed of layers of the lightest sponge, a dab of jam, dollops of custard and a giant mound of whipped cream. And that’s all layered under a pretty marzipan top layer. Mmm.

It’s most traditional for Prinsesstarta to be a grass-green colour, but I’m also loving the pinkness of the Princess Cake at Kaffekoppen.

If you do fancy like trying the green variety, then we also loved the Princess Cake at Sturekatten, located in a gorgeous 18th century house near Ostermalm.

And don’t forget to try the Prinsesstarta at Vete-Katten. They also have a cacophony of other beautiful Swedish treats, including Kanelbullar (Swedish cinnamon and cardomom buns). Yum

2 | Fotografiska

And if the Kanelbullar at Vete-Katten take your fancy then you’ll love the ones at Fotografiska

Fotografiska is a super-cool private museaum that showcases contemporary photography, and it’s water-wise location also makes it one of the most Instagrammable places in Stockholm.

Use an afternoon to peruse their newest exhibits, and then head upstairs to the top floor cafe and restaurant with its giant picture windows and stunning island views.

As well as ordering the Kanelbullar, take the opportunity to try some traditional Swedish meatballs. At Fotografiska the turkey meatballs are served on rye bread with lashings of sauce. Mmm.

3 | Meatballs For The People

And, if meatballs are your thing, then you must visit Meatballs For The People.

This Sodermalm-based restaurant now enjoys cult status in Stockholm for serving the best meatballs, and has hour-long queues to prove it.

But the wait is most definately worth it to get to try their gorgeous meatballs, served with a dollop of the smoothest mash (hello butter), pickled cucumbers and lingonberries for a little zing. Nom.

What’s also great about the restaurant is that they serve about a dozen different kinds of meatballs – from beef, to roe deer, reindeer and venison and then all the way through to salmon. Something for everyone :)

4 | Strandvägen

By now you’re probably feeling the food, and so a walk along Strandvägen is probably a good idea. Plus, look at how pretty and photogenic it is…

Strandvägen is a boulevard on Ostermalm, that also serves as one of the bases to catch boats and see the islands from the open water.

Moreover, there are also some great open-air cafes and restaurants that look right on to the water. My favourite out of all of them is Glashuset, with its wild flowers literally everywhere and picture perfect views. Stop, have a drink or a nibble, relax, take a pic ;)

5 | Monteliusvagen

If views are your thing then head to the top of Monteliusvagen, a cliff-top walking path on the northern side of Sodermalm, that has stunning views of Lake Mälaren, City Hall, Riddarholmen and of course Gamla Stan.

6 | The Tak Rooftop Bar & Cinema

One of the things that Stockholm has a lot of are rooftop bars and areas, and the one we love best is Tak.

Every Saturday, the quirky rooftop space hosts a film night, and the drinks and nibbles are always good.

Most of all though we love the views, and could sit here all night drinking them in…

7 | Gamla Stan (The Old Town)

One of the most Instagrammable places in Stockholm has to be Gamla Stan – otherwise known as the old town.

Located on a little island just north of Sodermalm, Gamla Stan is incredibely good looking with its tall, narrow houses, cobbled avenues and old town charm.

In fact, the obvious (and some might say best) area of Gamla Stan is the Stortoget – the uber beautiful little square. Even on a rainy day its gorgeous!
