Oud Immortel by Byredo Perfume Review

Oud Immortel by Byredo is my first fragrance from the niche, relatively new Swedish perfume house.

“BYREDO. It comes from the old English, “redolence”, which might even be Shakespearean, meaning “sweet-smelling perfume”

A deep, spicy, complex Oud, with a playful heart

Established in 2006, the luxury perfumers at Byredo have produced fragrances that have become incredibly coveted. It’s therefore fair to say that I’ve wanted to try them out for a while now. Since visiting the Middle East I’ve become enchanted with Arabian scents, and so my first purchase had to be Oud Immortel by Byredo.

A deep, spicy, complex Oud, with a playful heart

I could kick myself for not buying an Oud perfume while I was in the Middle East, so I’ve done a lot of research to try and find the best one in London.

I’ve narrowed the search down to three – the Oud Immortel by Byredo, Frederich Malle’s Portrait of a Lady, and Yves Saint Laurent’s Oriental Collection Majestic Rose.

Oud Immortal By Byredo Perfume review wrap your lips around this

Spicy yet comforting, the soul of Arabia seems to be captured in Oud Immortel by Byredo. This Oud presents a complex layering of fragrances, opening with a hint of smoky incense, sweetened with pops of sparkling limoncello, all against that gorgeous Oud base note.

Already there is great depth, heightened with the brush of tobacco to intensify the smokiness, and cardamom that develops the spicy note. Then we have the woody notes that come in with the papyrus and patchouli, and a greater greenness with the oak moss.

Underneath all of this is the soul of the perfume – that invaluable, sensual Oud.

12 hour staying power

The Oud Immortel has quite good staying power – the first 5 hours are solid, and around hour 6 is when the intensity of the fragrance tapers off to a warm, woody scent. When I wake up the next morning, I still have traces of it on my skin, which I love.

To extend the scent I love brushing a little on my collar so that it stays super close to me, and on my scarf.

All in all, I love Oud Immortel by Byredo. It’s playful with the limoncello, and also has a spicy, smokiness with the cardamom and tobacco. Delicious.

The Details

Oud Immortel by Byredo is priced at £95 for 50ml and £142 for 100ml, and is available from Harrods, SpaceNK, Selfridges, and Liberty London.

Opso, A Brilliant Greek Place in Marylebone

Opso, named after the ancient Greek word for “delicacy”, is a Greek restaurant with a contemporary edge. Try a bowl of barrel aged feta cheese, which is of an entirely new texture to me, being elastic and pull-able rather than crumbly. Spooning this on top of toasty bread, doused in both olive oil and tzatziki, brings a pleasure so disproportionate that my dining companion edges an inch away from me. Sod it, it’s that good.
