Sushisamba for Bae’s 33rd Birthday

Sushisamba, Liverpool Street

Its only once that your husband turns 33, and this year we celebrated his birthday with Saturday brunch at Sushisamba.

As a sign of how manic my summer has been, I’ve only just gotten round to writing about bae’s birthday brunch at Sushisamba. He’s always wanted to go, and to be honest so have I, so when his birthday swung round in July we found the perfect opportunity to pop in.

Sushisamba can however be quite a pricey place. For a special occasion it’s a beautiful restaurant to go to, however this summer we also just got married, which left us a little lighter in the pocket…  therefore we were thankful to stumble on the weekend brunch menu.

Priced at £62 for 4 courses, the brunch at Sushisamba represents great value for money, considering there are also quite a few drinks included. You can also order mocktails in place of the cocktails, which is very helpful.

Brunch at Sushisamba

The weekend brunch at Sushisamba starts with a couple of zesty Kaffirinha’s – mocktails for us. These are quickly followed with the first course of crunchy Pasteis, served with mango chutney, shichimi togarashi and a twist of lime.

Following this comes the sushi and sashimi portion of the brunch menu, which takes the form of Zuca Maki. These consist of round dollops of salmon rolled with cream cheese and zigzagged with mango and avocado. Mmm.

We also order an extra item from the a la carte – the fatty tuna belly nigiri. This arrives with a glittery flourish, topped with fragments of shimmery gold leaf. I mean, it is a birthday after all ;)

After a short interval, which is spent looking dreamily out at the view, we dig in to the next course. Feijoda, a Brazilian-style bean stew, is served rich and thick, and topped with juicy strips of picanha steak. The original version on the menu also comes with pork and chorizo, but we ask for these to be removed.

It’s worth noting however that there is a quite a lot of hesitation at this request. In fact, I have a feeling that the only reason they acquiesce is because we are there early at 11am, before anyone else. There may have also been a little gentle persuasion on my part.

But, if this is an issue, then I would advise you to check when you book that they are willing to serve you a pork-free Feijoda. To tell the truth, I’m surprised that this is even an issue. Strange.

A Brazilian French Toast

Minor drama over, and Feijoda lovingly guzzled, we move on to the sweet portion of our brunch. This takes the form of a Rabanada (can you feel that R roll?) which is a Brazilian-style french toast. Didn’t know that there was a Brazilian take on this, but cool.

After the Feijoda and tuna nigiri, this is my favourite thing today. Imagine it; a length of bread soaked in egg wash, expertly tossed on flames and served hot; crunchy on the outside and wet inside; and covered in coconut, mango, pineapple. Yaaas.

Brunch at Sushisamba ends with a coffee cocktail/mocktail, and a surprise candle-lit macaron from the restaurant for hubby. Look at that face. Nom.

All in all it’s been a memorable brunch and we’ve had a fantastic experience, and I couldn’t recommend it more!

Is the food at Sushisamba Halal?

Sushisamba don’t serve any halal meat. But they do have a halal sushi menu, and lots of halal fish and vegetarian options if you’d like to visit.
