Amsterdam Street Food 101

You know when you find a place that you just love, and you wonder how it took you this long to discover it? That’s how I feel having just visited Amsterdam. Moreover, my trip to ‘dam is with hubby, and we’re both foodies. Inevitably, our trip is therefore all about eating eating street food…

Armed with Instagram, we set out to visit all the places in Amsterdam with the most Instagrammable food. Its been epic, and we are absolutely stuffed. Ahh. Without further ado then, this is how to spend 48 hours in Amsterdam chasing street food.

Lunch at Jansz (truffled eggs and juicy burgers)

Jansz is the main restaurant at Hotel Pulitzer and serves some stunning food. After checking in to the hotel and dumping your bags, head over to Jansz to start your food journey in Amsterdam. With burgers and some silky, truffled scrambled eggs. Mmm.

Freakshakes at Ree7

The Pulitzer Hotel is handily located in the 9 Streets neighbourhood of Amsterdam, which puts you right in the middle of a lot of foodie action. Explore the gorgeous canals, and the lovely street food…

Amsterdam ree7 milk shakes

Which brings us to Ree7. The title for the most instagrammable street food in Amsterdam has to go to Ree7 for their gorgeous Freakshakes. Choose between pastel pink or blue ones, topped with donuts, candy floss and sour sweets. If you ask nicely, the resto will let you run down to the nearest canal to take a shot. If you’re a normal human being and not fuelled by likes on Instagram (ahem, #sorrynotsorry) then no need to run anywhere. Just enjoy :)

Top tip – if you have only a weekend in Amsterdam, like us, then the best way to cover all the street food is probably to take a few bites and save the rest for later. So for example at Ree7 we doggy-bagged the donuts, floss and sweets to eat later at the hotel, and just drank the shakes. This worked super well for us.

Poffertjes from The Pancake Bakery

Ok, so you cannot come to Amsterdam without trying Poffertjes, which are cute little mini pancakes. Sort of the same size as blinis. We got ours to go, from The Pancake Bakery, and explored the canals whilst eating. They are addictive.

Bitterballen at the Red Light District

Amsterdam bitterballen

I’ve already had the pleasure of popping Amsterdam’s hot Bitterballen in my mouth (oh, matron) when I visited Rotterdam last year. For the uninitiated, Bitterballen are something in between a meatball and a croquette. Served hot, they crunch and release a meaty-potatoey-gravy in your mouth. So good, deeply addictive, nom.

Drinks & snacks at W Amsterdam

Having walked off the last few rounds of foodie naughtiness, it is now time to catch your first sunset. Therefore head to the rooftop bar at W Amsterdam, order some snacks, and watch the sun set.

Midnight snacks at Foodhallen

Round off your very first night in Amsterdam with some midnight snacks at Foodhallen, a very cool indoor food market. The hot dogs are immense. Ahhh.

Pancakes and french toast for breakfast at The Pulitzer

On the following day, start out your foodie adventures at Jansz’ ample breakfast bar. From here nibble on dutch pastries, cheese and meats, and also save room for the truffled and scrambled eggs on baked brioche, topped with avocado. Yum. Also the buttermilk pancakes are immense, drizzled with chocolate sauce and whipped cream.

Flowers (and cheese) at the Bloemenmarkt

Amsterdam cheese shop

Amsterdam’s Bloemenmarkt is the only floating flower market in the world, which gently floats and fills the air with the most gorgeous smells. Opposite the flowers are stores selling ‘dams famous cheese, from which you can taste as much as you like, and hopefully walk away with a couple of cheese wheels to take home. We picked the truffle cheese, and will be making some special mac’n’cheese with it. Watch this space!

Stroopwafels from Van Wonderen

After admiring the flowers and cheese, head to Van Wonderen and pick up a freshly made Stroopwafel. You can choose from a cacophony of different toppings, but for us it has to be the chocolate and marshmallow. Tip – share one, to save room for…

Chips at Vlaams Friteshuis Vleminckx

When in Amsterdam…

A post shared by TheCrazyTable (@thecrazytable) on

Vlaams Friteshuis Vleminckx is one of the most iconic chip shops in Amsterdam, and is handily located just round the corned from Van Wonderen. Head in for a small cone of fries, remembering to also save room for…

Shrimp croquettes at Patisserie Holtkamp

croquettes Patisserie Holtkamp

Ok, ok, no human can possibly be hungry after all that… but you just have to try the shrimp croquettes from Patisserie Holtkamp. This hole-in-the-wall bakery is stuffed full of baked goods, and waiting customers. It’s a very popular spot and for good reason. Their croquettes are just incredible – served piping hot, stuffed full of cheese and shrimp, and coated in a crumb that crunches just to. Ahhh. Heaven.

Donuts from Peejays

So I saw a shot of the donuts from Peejays on Instagram, and knew in my heart that I needed them in my life. All six of them. They are as delicious as they look.

Albert Cuypmarkt (and *those* hot dogs)

Your street food pit stops of today will take you conveniently to the neighbourhood of De Pijp, which is where the Albert Cuypmarkt is located. This is a market of all things – fish, meat, clothes, designy-stuff. But we’re mostly here for the street food, obvi. Having already tried the stroopwafels, chips and sweet treats, we opted for the BBQ chicken ‘hot dogs’, which are insanely good. Imagine hot little bites of crunchy, BBQ glazed chicken, stuffed into a steamed hot dog bun and covered in American cheese. More please.

Incredible views at A’DAM Toren (and Oliebollen)

To end you last day in Amsterdam, head to the rooftop bar of A’DAM Toren and catch your final stunning sunset. On the way there, there is a food truck that sells fresh Oliebollen. These are basically deep fried sweet dumplings tossed in powdered cinnamon sugar, which are usually eaten around New Years Eve. I love that this food truck sells them year round.

So there you have it, that’s my ultimate list of the street food to try in Amsterdam. Have fun!
