Hungry? Here are the best cardamom and cinnamon buns in London!

I love a good Swedish bun. You know the ones I mean – they’re glossy, golden, and knotted, and swirled with cinnamon or cardamom sugar. And they’re huge, big enough for two to share if you’re feeling generous. Over the years I’ve had a couple of really great buns, all good enough to recommend. So, here’s my list of the best Swedish cardamom and cinnamon buns in London.

What are Swedish cinnamon and cardamom buns?

There are two main kinds of Swedish bun or roll. The first are cardamom buns (Kardemummabullar), and the second are cinnamon buns (Kanelbullar).

Both are formed of the same pastry twisted into a bun. The only difference is that kardemummabullar are filled with cardamom, and kanelbullar with cinnamon.

And what’s so nice about them, apart from their deliciousness, is how they pull apart. Tug at the pastry and the bun unwinds into scrumptious, bite-sized bits. They also have a great crust which is crispy but still delicate.

Swedish buns and rolls are made of two different things. The first is a yeast dough enriched with butter, and the second is the spiced sugar and butter filling. Since cardamom and cinnamon are my favourite spices, I was always going to fall for these Swedish buns.

So here are the best cafes to order Swedish buns in London.

1. Fabrique, Holborn (and others)

For the prettiest cinnamon and cardamom buns

Fabrique is a Nordic bakery with four different branches in London, and is one of the better-known places to eat Swedish buns. I always end up at the Holborn branch, and the warm waft of cardamom gets me through the door. All the branches I’ve visited are a good size, big enough to never feel too busy, and to nab a table.

Fabrique have both cinnamon and cardamom buns, which are both massive and sprinkled with spiced sugar.

I always end up ordering a couple, and eat the first one at Fabrique with a strong coffee and a good book. It’s one of my favourite ways to spend an hour in the city, and their Swedish buns are some of the best in London.

2. Bageriet, Covent Garden

For secret Swedish cinnamon buns

I had no idea Bageriet existed until a friend let me in on the secret. It’s tucked away in a tiny alley between Covent Garden and Leicester Square, minding its own business. But also serving some of the best cinnamon buns in London. And even though its a tiny place, because it’s so hidden you’ll never have to queue for cinnamon buns again.

Best of all, there are a couple of tables outside Bageriet in the crook of the alley. If you can nab one of these, then you can take your time unwinding warm rolls, bit by delicious bit. Who knew such a quiet place existed in the hubbub of the West End?

3. Soderburg Bakery, Soho

For a roomy café to linger over a Swedish bun

Soderburg is a Nordic bakery with a great selection of Swedish baked goods. I remember when it first opened, and the excitement I felt at trying their cardamom rolls. My phone guided me the first bit of the way, through the busy streets of Soho, and then I followed the smell of cardamom.

As well as a great selection of Swedish buns, Soderburg is also one of the roomier bakeries and is perfect to take your time in. That means you’ll possibly order more than just one cardamom bun (and loads of coffee). Which is all good, since they have some of the best cardamom buns in London.

As soon as a saw instagram pictures of the cinnamon buns at Miel Bakery, I knew I had to swing by. This bright blue café is located just off the top end of Tottenham Court Road, past Warren Street station. It’s a small space and there’s just one table outside it – a sought after spot.

But then I never end up lingering too long at Miel, because there are great streets to explore around the bakery. I usually end up taking my golden-glossed cinnamon roll for a walk through the pretty streets of Fitzrovia.

Opso, A Brilliant Greek Place in Marylebone

Opso, named after the ancient Greek word for “delicacy”, is a Greek restaurant with a contemporary edge. Try a bowl of barrel aged feta cheese, which is of an entirely new texture to me, being elastic and pull-able rather than crumbly. Spooning this on top of toasty bread, doused in both olive oil and tzatziki, brings a pleasure so disproportionate that my dining companion edges an inch away from me. Sod it, it’s that good.
